IMBES Conference '07

Optional Short Course

An Introduction to the Brain and Neurosciences for Educators and Practitioners

The purpose of this pre-conference workshop is to introduce educators and practitioners to the anatomy and physiology of the brain and learning. The workshop will use various clinical syndromes, cases and findings to “tour” the brain, in order to derive a set of basic principles of brain development, functioning and organization. The workshop is designed to help participants become informed and critical consumers of brain research as it is portrayed both in technical reports and in the popular press, with specific attention to applications of neuroscience to educational and clinical settings. Topics presented will include, among others: the functional organization of the brain at a microscopic and at a macro level, the nature of learning and memory and their ties to emotion, the role of educational, cultural and other experience in shaping the brain and learning, development of the biological substrate for social behavior and morality, relationships between cognition and emotion, and an overview of the various research methods used by neuroscientists. The session will conclude with a discussion of the relationship between education and neuroscience, promising directions for applying neuroscience in the classroom, and the role of educators in shaping the future of cognitive neuroscience.
