IMBES sponsors occasional workshops and institutes about new biological and cognitive research as they relate to educational issues.
A Working Group on Mind, Brain and Education was held Nov. 7-11, 2003 at the Plenary Session for the 400th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican.
The first IMBES Summer Institute on Mind, Brain and Education was held July 16-20, 2005 in Erice, Italy.
A conference on Usable Knowledge in Mind, Brain, Education was held at Harvard Graduate School of Education (see the Usable Knowledge web site for more).
The inaugural international IMBES conference took place November 2007 in Fort Worth, Texas. The conference was titled, “Mind, Brain, and Education: The nature of human learning and how educational policy can profit from research.” Chaired by Marc Schwartz, the conference included speakers such as Kurt Fischer and Howard Gardner and topics as diverse as emotion and attention in learning, research methodology, and teacher preparation. In this workshop, participants discussed how biological rhythms, such as day-night cycles of waking and sleeping, affect learning and school performance. The slides for talks at the workshop are available for viewing in pdf format (Adobe Acrobat can be downloaded at www.adobe.com).

The first Regional Academic Conference sponsored by IMBES will take place this October in Nanjing, China. The Asia-Pacific Conference on Mind, Brain, and Education has three main aims: to strengthen dialogue and exchange between psychologists, neuroscientists, engineers, and educational researchers; to enhance regional interests in the learning sciences; and to improve the status of research in the field of MBE in the Asia-Pacific region. The third IMBES Summer Institute was held July 14 – 16, 2008 in Erice, Italy. Sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, the Sicilian Regional Government, and IMBES, the institute's focus was "Neuroeducation: New perspectives on teaching and learning."
